Rekha, in her letter to Patnaik, said, "The National Commission for Women received an e-mail wherein it was stated that a woman journalist covering the protest by students of Jamia Millia Islamia was hit and abused by the cops. It is further stated in the e-mail that the police had hit her with a baton and pulled her hair."

The letter said it was perturbed by the incident and requested "to intervene in the matter" and asked to "apprise a detailed action taken report."

The Commission said that it had taken cognisance of other matters also based on several media reports wherein it had been allegedly reported that the female students were beaten up and even sexually harassed by the male police officers.

Based on the media reports the commission said, "It is further alleged that lights were switched off to prevent any recording in the CCTV cameras before they started assaulting students."

The Commission said it was "seriously concerned about the incident and the reported police brutality as it is the role and duty of the police to preserve public order, prevent crimes and reduce the opportunities for the commission of crimes".

On Friday, Jamia University students had organised a protest which also had ended in violence.
