Proactive approach key to tackling cybercrime, says Gujarat DGP

Gandhinagar, April 9 A growing reliance on proactive policing and advanced technology to tackle cyber crime was stressed upon during a high-level review of Gujarat's 'Cyber Centre of Excellence', chaired by the State Director General of Police (DGP), K.L.N. Rao, in Gandhinagar.

The meeting, held at the Police Bhavan on Thursday, was attended by senior officials of the Cyber Centre along with newly appointed Police Inspectors.

It focused on strengthening the state's response to the increasing scale and sophistication of cyber offences.

A comprehensive review was undertaken on the rapid detection and prevention of cyber crimes, with detailed discussions on emerging trends and evolving modus operandi, including digital fraud, online scams, social media-related offences and financial frauds.

Officials were also guided on improving technical preparedness and investigative efficiency.

A presentation on the functioning of the Cyber Centre of Excellence highlighted key operational mechanisms.

These included the role of helpline '1930' in ensuring prompt redressal of complaints and facilitating the blocking of suspicious financial transactions.

The review also covered investigation procedures, with emphasis on expediting probes into registered FIRs and ensuring timely refunds to victims.

Advanced tools such as data analytics, digital forensics and real-time intelligence gathering methods were discussed in detail.

Infrastructure development and capacity building were also key areas of focus.

Discussions were held on strengthening physical infrastructure and enhancing human resources, while emphasising the need for regular training programmes and workshops to keep police officers updated with evolving technologies.

Addressing the meeting, DGP Rao said that a "proactive approach" is essential in the fight against cyber crimes.

He directed police officers to leverage modern technology, coordinate closely with other agencies, and ensure real-time sharing of information.

The Gujarat DGP also stressed the need to enhance public awareness, calling for special campaigns in schools, colleges and across social platforms to promote cyber safety.

Newly appointed Police Inspectors were encouraged to resolve complaints in a time-bound manner with dedication.

DGP Rao appreciated the performance of the Cyber Centre team and urged them to develop the facility into a "model centre" to effectively combat cyber crime.
