Tapas Roy, Sajal Ghosh were forced out of Trinamool: Kunal Ghosh
Kolkata, May 14 Trinamool Congress MLA Kunal Ghosh on Thursday said that leaders such as Tapas Roy and Sajal Ghosh were forced to leave the Trinamool Congress and called for an “introspection” following the party’s electoral debacle.
Kunal Ghosh made these suggestive comments after taking oath as the Beleghata MLA in the West Bengal Assembly. His comments have created speculation on social media.
As Pro-tem Speaker, former Trinamool Congress MLA Tapas Roy, who won the Assembly elections this time on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket from the Maniktala constituency, administered the oath to Assembly election winners as MLAs.
Kunal Ghosh was one of the MLAs who was sworn in on Thursday by Tapas Roy.
Another former Trinamool Congress leader, Sajal Ghosh, won from the Barahnagar constituency on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket this time.
Kunal mentioned these two leaders in a social media post.
“Pro-tem Speaker Tapas Roy administered the oath to me. A long-time elder brother and leader. We tried to keep him in Trinamool. Unfortunately, we couldn’t. Later, despite political opposition, the party suspended me for personally speaking well of Tapas da.
“Incidentally, I am now taking the oath of office at the hands of Tapas da, who is an MLA of the Bharatiya Janata Party. How fortune changes,” he wrote.
Tapas Roy officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. At that time, he was the MLA from Baranagar.
When Tapas Roy left the Trinamool Congress, Kunal Ghosh himself went to his house. He had a long meeting with Tapas Roy and the then state minister, Bratya Basu.
However, Tapas Roy did not change his mind about joining the Bharatiya Janata Party.
At that time, Kunal Ghosh had continuously spoken out against a section of the party. He also faced disciplinary action for that, as he mentioned in the post.
Referring to Sajal Ghosh, Kunal Ghosh wrote, “Sajal is also a councillor. Tapas da and Sajal Ghosh were forced to leave the party. I tried to keep both of them, but I failed. Now they are MLAs.
“I am a Trinamool soldier. The fight will continue. However, because of those due to whom Tapas da, Sajal, and many others left the party, the party suffered losses, and even after that, the same kind of nepotism through WhatsApp cry politics is going on, which is very objectionable and worrying.”
Kunal Ghosh also claimed that party workers are losing patience.
Although he did not mention anyone in the party by name, it is easy to guess whom Kunal Ghosh was referring to and against whom his anger was directed.
It is known that Kunal Ghosh has a bitter relationship with Kolkata Uttar Member of Parliament Sudip Bandopadhyay and his wife Nayna Bandopadhyay.
This internal conflict within the party has come to light several times before.
Kunal Ghosh alleged that one of the reasons for Tapas Roy’s departure from the party was Sudip Bandopadhyay.
Kunal Ghosh has repeatedly accused Sudip Bandopadhyay of directly “appropriating” work to party leader Mamata Banerjee on WhatsApp.
Many believe that Kunal Ghosh again hinted at that by mentioning “WhatsApp cry politics” in Thursday’s post.
Apart from that, a few days ago, Sudip Bandopadhyay’s wife, Nayna, was appointed deputy leader of the Trinamool Congress Legislative Party.
Although Kunal Ghosh did not say anything publicly, he expressed a “silent protest” over it.
Although he congratulated Leader of the Opposition Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, Chief Whip Firhad Hakim, and another party leader, Asima Patra, he did not mention Nayna Bandopadhyay’s name.
