Uttar Pradesh: AMU Aligarh Students Clash Over Mosquito Net in Hostel, Argument Turns Violent
A bizarre dispute over a mosquito net inside a hostel room at Aligarh Muslim University escalated into a physical altercation between two students residing at the university’s SS North Hall. One student accused the other of “attracting all the mosquitoes” by hanging a mosquito net around his bed. The argument intensified after repeated complaints about discomfort inside the shared room. Eventually, both students reached the university’s proctor's office and submitted written complaints against each other. University authorities have now initiated an inquiry into the incident, which has drawn attention due to the unusual reason behind the clash.
The dispute reportedly involved two roommates staying in the same hostel accommodation. One of the students belongs to Kashmir, while the other is from Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh. To protect himself from the intense heat and mosquito menace during the summer, the Kashmiri student installed a mosquito net around his sleeping area. Initially, the arrangement appeared harmless, but his roommate soon objected to it. The second student claimed that the mosquitoes in the room began gathering around his side because of the net, causing him greater inconvenience and frequent mosquito bites during the night.
Tensions between the two students continued to rise as disagreements over the mosquito net became more frequent. The roommate also alleged that the net obstructed the airflow coming from the room’s cooler, making the already warm conditions even more uncomfortable. What started as a verbal disagreement eventually turned into a heated confrontation and later physical violence. Following the scuffle, both students approached the proctor's office separately and accused each other of misconduct. The university administration treated the matter seriously and decided to examine the complaints in detail before taking any further action against those involved in the incident.
Speaking about the matter, AMU Proctor Professor Naved Ali Khan confirmed that the incident occurred at SS North Hall, where students from different academic years were sharing a room. He stated that the students involved are pursuing graduation and belong to the second and third years, respectively. He further added that one student complained that the mosquito net redirected mosquitoes toward his side of the room, while the other issue concerned blocked cooler airflow. The proctor added that arguments over such minor matters are unfortunate and assured that authorities are attempting to resolve the issue peacefully, although strict action would follow if violence is proven during the investigation.
