Civic Action Ensures Trees Are Saved in Belapur After Citizen Complaints
Navi Mumbai: The timely intervention of alert citizens helped prevent the illegal cutting and damage of trees in Kille Gaothan, Belapur, environmentalists said. Concerned residents, including Paramdeep Grewal, closely monitored a plot being developed behind the NRI Coastal Police Station and raised objections to ongoing activities.
"I have been running from pillar to post to save these trees, as construction debris was being dumped on them," said Grewal, who sought the support of the NatConnect Foundation.
Responding swiftly, NatConnect Director B.N. Kumar alerted Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde and City Engineer Shirish Aradwad, sharing photographs and videos of the environmental violations.
Following the complaints, the private builder was compelled to address the issue. His representatives visited the site and assured residents that no trees would be harmed, and the debris dumped on them would be cleared.
While the builder had permission to remove certain trees within his plot, concerns arose as additional trees were being affected, Kumar said. The builder’s team has now committed to planting new trees in compensation for those removed.
Kumar expressed satisfaction with the civic authorities' prompt action. However, he emphasized that while it is the responsibility of municipal officials to enforce compliance with construction permits, citizens must also remain vigilant against environmental violations.
NatConnect further urged civic authorities and law enforcement to protect environmental activists, as they often face hostility from anti-social elements.
