General Manoj Mukund Naravane took over as the Army chief at around 12 pm on Tuesday. Naravane took charge as the Chief of Army Staff, succeeding General Bipin Rawat.

Lt Gen Naravane was heading the Eastern Command of the Army which takes care of India's nearly 4,000-km border with China.

He was made the first Chief of Defense Staff of the country. Before becoming the Deputy Chief of Army Staff in September, Naravane was heading the Eastern Command of the Army, which guards India's nearly four thousand kilometers border with China.

Army Chief General Bipin Rawat retired on December 31 after three years in the post.

Naravane was commissioned into the Seventh Battalion, Sikh Light Infantry Regiment in June 1980

During his service of 37 years, he served in various command, was active in counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir and Northeast and held many important responsibilities.
