Bihar's "empty treasury" crisis: Tejashwi Yadav vows to dismantle "NDA syndicate", restore governance

Patna (Bihar) [India], April 22 : Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, on Wednesday lambasted the NDA government in Bihar, alleging large-scale financial mismanagement and corruption.

In a post on X, Yadav claimed that the state government is facing what he described as a "widespread financial crisis" and has recently issued "a second letter regarding fund withdrawals and expenditure controls," while facing severe fund shortages.

He accused the NDA administration of "looting the treasury" to fund pre-election distributions, leaving social pensions, student credits, and employee salaries in limbo.

"To save their seats, the terrified Bhunja gangfrightened by corrupt retired and compromised high officials and agenciesmet with the unconscious, inactive Chief Minister and got the rickety government to distribute 41,000 crore rupees in the last 30 days before the elections."

As a result, there are hardly any funds left for key welfare schemes.

"Now, for months, there are no funds left with the NDA government to provide social pensions to the elderly, to pay student credit card dues, to give scholarships to students, or even to pay salaries and pensions to employeesbecause corruption has emptied the treasury," he added.

Yadav further claimed that the state is now forced to run on borrowed funds, highlighting a debt of 4 lakh crore rupees and daily interest payments. The "New Bihar" framework proposed by the RJD leadership claims that this isn't just a lack of funds, but a lack of political will.

"The jury-rigged government, built on systems, machinery, and conspiracies, is now running on borrowed money at interest, that is, on loans. This corrupt government is spending over 100 crore rupees daily just on interest payments. The situation is such that the NDA government has saddled Bihar with a debt burden of nearly 4 lakh crore rupees or more," he said.

He also cited the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report, alleging that expenditure worth over Rs 90,000 crore lacks proper utilisation records.

"The CAG report reveals that the double-engine government failed to submit utilisation certificates for 90,000 crore rupees in expenditure. Meaning, the spending happened, but whether it filled the pockets of NDA leaders and officials or was divvied up in the NDA syndicate, under which head this money was looted, the government has no clue," he said, targeting the administration.

Calling the NDA government "corrupt and directionless," Yadav alleged that Bihar's development has stalled under its rule.

"The NDA government, neck-deep in corruption, manages to siphon money from Bihar's treasury but has no idea where 92,132 crore rupees were spent... Bihar's treasury has become so empty that the entire state has ground to a complete halt, with not a single development scheme in operation. Do you know why? Because such an utterly useless government is running Biharone that has neither vision nor a roadmap!... Corruption in the NDA government has grown so colossal that the corrupt have become the emperors," he further added.
