Uttar Pradesh government on Monday accepted the proposal of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to deploy  1,000 buses for migrant labourers. Awanish Awasthi, Additional Chief Secretary (Home), sent a letter to the office of Priyanka - the Congress' state unit in-charge - asking her to provide details of the buses along with the names of drivers at the earliest. Awasthi stated that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has accepted the proposal sent by her on May 16.

In wake of the rising number of road accidents killing scores of migrant labourers trying to reach back to their homes, Priyanka Gandhi had on Saturday wrote to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, seeking permission to deploy 1,000 buses in service to transport the labourers safely. In a letter to the UP chief minister, Priyanka had stated that the Congress Party will bear the cost of the buses and had slammed the government saying not enough arrangments made for the returning migrant workers. “Lakhs of workers are trying to get back to their homes walking from various parts of the country and there are not enough arrangements made for them. We wish to operate 500 buses each from Ghazipur and Noida borders,” she wrote in the letter. The Yogi Adityanath government, meanwhile, announced on Sunday that the state would ensure no stranded migrant in UP is forced to embark upon a foot journey to commute to their native places.
