Tamil Nadu's Edappadi K Palaniswami government has issued a notification as per the recommendation of an experts committee for changing the names of 1,018 places, including of many important places, in accordance with how they are exactly pronounced in Tamil.

For instance, Coimbatore will be called Koyampuththoor and Perambur has been renamed as Peramboor. The government order giving effect to that announcement said committees were set up in each district to recommend how place names should be written in English. The name change has been notified in a gazette, but the changes to be reflected inboards will have to wait till the coronavirus pandemic is cleared. This is not the first instance where names have been changed, earlier Bangalore was rechristened as Bengaluru and Madras as Chennai.
