PMC Controversy: BJP Women Corporators Clash Over ‘Percentage Cut’ Allegations in Baner Project, Video Surfaces
Fresh allegations of “percentage cuts” in civic projects have once again surfaced within the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), sparking controversy on Wednesday. The issue came to light after a tense confrontation between two BJP women corporators over an ongoing development in Baner. What reportedly began as a disagreement soon escalated into a heated argument, drawing attention within political circles. The clash has raised serious concerns about transparency in civic works, especially as such accusations have emerged repeatedly in the past, prompting renewed scrutiny of how municipal contracts and project executions are being handled at various levels within the PMC administration.
The episode, which allegedly involved a verbal altercation, exchange of abusive remarks and disruption inside the civic body’s building department, quickly gained traction after a video clip surfaced online. The viral footage intensified the situation, turning what may have remained an internal dispute into a larger political controversy. As the visuals spread across social media platforms, opposition voices as well as members within the ruling party began reacting strongly. The incident not only embarrassed the civic administration but also triggered wider debates around accountability, conduct of elected representatives, and the functioning of departments responsible for overseeing key infrastructure and welfare projects.
At the centre of the dispute is an under-construction residential education facility meant for tribal girl students in Baner. Officials indicated that nearly 85 to 90 per cent of the project has already been completed, with only the final phase of work pending. A tender worth approximately Rs 3 crore for the remaining tasks has been approved by the standing committee. However, tensions reportedly escalated at this crucial stage, with allegations of commission demands surfacing. Former corporator Rajashree Kale, who has closely monitored the project, visited the PMC office where current corporator Rohini Chimte and the contractor were present, leading to a confrontation over the project’s execution.

Kale alleged that the project’s progress was being deliberately hindered due to demands for a “percentage cut.” She claimed the project, which is vital for the welfare of tribal girls, was nearing completion but was being stalled over financial expectations. According to her, the corporator had cautioned the contractor against proceeding with the work until a certain commission was paid, allegedly using her position to apply pressure. Kale’s accusations have further fuelled the controversy, raising questions about whether financial interests are interfering with the timely completion of important public welfare initiatives.
Responding to the allegations, corporator Rohini Chimte firmly rejected all claims of wrongdoing and provided a different explanation for the dispute. She stated that the disagreement was related to unfinished work concerning the compound wall of the project. According to Chimte, the incomplete boundary wall has been causing inconvenience to nearby residents, and she had merely insisted that this aspect be addressed first before proceeding further. She maintained that her concerns were being misinterpreted and that there was no truth to the accusations of commission demands, calling the controversy a misunderstanding.
