Pune Tragedy: Two Youths Drown While Trying to Rescue Friend at Shirde Dam Backwaters Near Kamshet

A tragedy struck near the Shirde Dam backwaters in the Rajmachi area of Kamshet on Sunday, May 17, when two youngsters drowned while on an outing with friends. The deceased have been identified as Karan Gyandev Thombre, a resident of Balaji Vihar in Kodoli, Satara, and Arya Sushant Bandawar, a resident of Gondia.

According to the Kamshet Police, the complaint was lodged by Sujal Prakash Pawar (19), a resident of Susgaon in Mulshi taluka. Sujal and a group of friends had planned a trip to the Rajmachi Fort area on Sunday morning. The group included Karan Thombre, Arya Bandawar, Aastha Tembre, Srushti Gawade, and Jyotsna Shelke. While travelling along the Old Pune-Mumbai Highway, the group stopped at Vadgaon for breakfast before continuing towards Rajmachi. However, after reaching the area, they decided to spend time at the Shirde Dam backwaters instead of visiting the fort. At around noon, Arya Bandawar and Jyotsna Shelke walked into the backwater area.

Police said Arya reportedly misjudged the depth of the water and began to drown. Hearing Jyotsna’s cries for help, Karan Thombre jumped into the water in an attempt to rescue Arya . Unfortunately, he too was unable to swim and became trapped in the deep water. Friends and tourists present at the spot immediately alerted the police through Dial 100. With the help of local residents, police personnel, and tourists, both victims were eventually pulled out of the water and rushed to Mahavir Hospital. However, doctors declared them dead on arrival.
