Sahar Shaikh, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) corporator from Mumbra, Thane District, has been accused of obtaining a fake caste certificate to contest the recently held Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) elections. The allegations have raised the possibility of action against her position as a corporator.
A complaint alleged that she submitted a bogus caste certificate to contest the elections. The complainant demanded a thorough investigation and demanded a fraud case against her.
According to the complaint, Sahar Shaikh’s father, Yunus Iqbal Shaikh, originally from Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad district and later migrated to Maharashtra and allegedly obtained a caste certificate by misleading authorities using Form 8 meant for Other Backward Classes (BC). It is alleged that Form 10, applicable to migrants, was not used. Based on this, Sahar Shaikh later secured a caste certificate from the Mumbai City Collectorate and contested the Thane civic polls on an AIMIM ticket, winning the election.

The complaint was filed by Siddiqui Ahmed at the Thane Sub-Divisional Officer’s office, seeking verification of the caste certificate. He alleged that the authorities were misled during the process of issuance.
During a hearing before the Thane tehsildar, Yunus Sheikh was absent on March 18, citing illness, while his lawyers submitted documents, including a printed copy of the caste certificate. At a subsequent hearing on March 23, certain discrepancies in the certificate were reportedly addressed.
Questions have also been raised over why the certificate was obtained from the Mumbai City Collector’s Office despite the family residing in Thane.
