Thane Dust Storm: Dy CM Eknath Shinde Escapes Major Mishap After Helicopter Hit By Strong Winds Near Kalyan; Lands At Juhu Airport
Shiv Sena leader and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde narrowly escaped a major accident after the helicopter carrying him was hit by the massive dust storm that swept across Thane, Kalyan and nearby areas on Thursday evening. Sudden strong winds, dust clouds and rapidly deteriorating weather conditions severely affected the flight mid-air. The chopper reportedly experienced turbulence as visibility dropped drastically due to the storm. However, the pilot’s timely judgement and technical expertise helped avert a serious mishap. The helicopter was eventually landed safely at Juhu Airport, and all passengers onboard escaped unharmed. The incident sparked concern among officials and supporters, though authorities later confirmed everyone was completely safe.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had departed from the helipad at Mahalaxmi Racecourse in Mumbai for an official visit to Kalyan and Murbad. Shortly after take-off, the weather suddenly changed, with stormy winds, rain and heavy dust sweeping through parts of the Kalyan region. While the helicopter was still airborne, it became caught in the middle of the severe weather conditions. Strong gusts and poor visibility reportedly made it extremely difficult for the pilot to maintain stable control of the aircraft. Despite the challenging situation, the pilot remained calm, used his flying expertise effectively, and managed to steer the helicopter away from the dangerous weather zone to avoid a potential disaster.

Realising the seriousness of the situation, the pilot immediately decided to divert the helicopter towards Juhu Airport and carried out a successful emergency landing. A total of eight people, including Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, were travelling in the helicopter during the incident. Those present included his personal assistant Prabhakar Kale, Chief Public Relations Officer Vinayak Patrudkar, OSD Rajput, the chief security officer, and other staff members accompanying the minister on the scheduled visit. Officials stated that the emergency landing was conducted smoothly despite the severe weather conditions, and the pilot’s timely response played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of all passengers onboard.
Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident, and all passengers safely exited the helicopter after landing at Juhu Airport. Authorities confirmed that Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the accompanying officials were completely unharmed. The pilot’s alertness and swift decision-making are being credited for preventing a potentially dangerous situation. Following the incident, changes were reportedly made to the Deputy Chief Minister’s scheduled tour plans. Sources indicated that instead of continuing the journey by air, he is likely to travel further by road. The incident has once again highlighted the risks posed by sudden weather changes and dust storms during aerial travel in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
