A 21-year-old woman filed a complaint stating she was in a relationship with the accused, but ended it after learning he was involved with other women. He then threatened to viral their photos on social media unless she resumed the relationship. When she travelled to Jaffrabad for her cousin's wedding, the accused followed and continued pressuring her. A police complaint was filed, but the harassment continued. On September 16, 2019, at around 5 am, when the woman went for a walk near Sai Mandir, Rakesh intercepted her, dragged her behind the temple and struck her on the head with a hammer with intent to kill, leaving her critically injured. A case was registered at the Kannad city police station. Then-Assistant Inspector Balaji Vaidya filed the chargesheet. Assistant Public Prosecutor Raju Pahadiya recorded statements of 12 witnesses during trial. The court convicted the accused under IPC Section 307, sentencing him to 5 years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 25,000 fine. S.M. Dhumal served as follow-up officer.
