Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:
The Damini squad, operating under the city police commissionerate, foiled a child marriage in the Jatwada on Sunday morning around 9 am. The team rushed to the spot just as arrangements were underway to solemnise the marriage of a minor girl.
According to the squad, the control room received information about a child marriage in the locality. Acting swiftly, the team led by police sub-inspector Kanchan Miradhe, along with personnel Kalpana Kharat, Sunita Naglod, Sarita Kundare, Sakshi Chandre, and member of the women and child development committee Nitesh Durve, reached the venue.
They demanded documents of the bride, which revealed from her Aadhaar card that she was 17 years and 6 months old. At the time, wedding preparations were in full swing, with relatives gathered, gifts arranged, and food being prepared.
The team counselled the parents, explaining that child marriage is a punishable offence under law. A written undertaking was obtained from the girl’s parents, and they were instructed to appear before the child welfare committee on March 30.
Due to the alertness of the Damini squad, the child marriage was successfully prevented.
