Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:
In Maharashtra, the Supreme Court has observed that the State Election Commission (SEC) has complied with its orders in recently held elections for 12 Zilla Parishads (ZPs) and 125 Panchayat Samitis (PSs). The outcome of the remaining ZP elections will be decided only after hearings scheduled on two specified dates, as clarified on Monday.
Hearing on pending elections in Supreme Court
A hearing was conducted in the Supreme Court regarding pending local body elections in Maharashtra. The SEC informed the Court that elections for all municipalities, municipal councils, municipal corporations, and the 12 ZPs and 125 PSs have been conducted in compliance with the Supreme Court’s orders. Only elections for 20 ZPs and their respective PSs remain pending. The SEC further stated that in these areas, the 50 per cent reservation limit is being exceeded.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the Supreme Court that elections for these ZPs and PSs could be conducted using the earlier method. However, the Apex Court did not issue any orders on this. The court will hold detailed hearings on the case on the two specified dates, allowing one day for arguments from the petitioners and one day for the respondents, said the court during Monday’s proceedings.
