Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:
A man who was signalled to stop for reckless driving responded by assaulting traffic police officers. He hurled verbal abuse and issued threats, stating, "I’ll deal with you." Following the viral spread of a video capturing the incident, police tracked down and arrested Arbaz Ahmed Shaikh (25, Baijipura) overnight. However, this marks the second attack on traffic police within the last 48 hours, sparking serious concerns.
Chetan Kishore Garde, of the traffic branch, was on duty at Amarpreet Chowk on Monday night. Around 8 pm, a traffic jam occurred at Mondha Naka, and Garde went there to help clear the congestion. At the scene, police had intercepted Arbaz for driving irresponsibly. Arbaz began shouting profanities at the officers. When Garde attempted to move him aside, the suspect grabbed him by the collar and assaulted other personnel. He further issued death threats before fleeing the scene.
Senior officials take serious note
Arbaz’s aggressive assault and vocal threats were captured in a video that subsequently went viral. Taking serious note of the matter, commissioner of police (CP) Pravin Pawar ordered his immediate arrest. Arbaz was apprehended during the night and placed in a cell.
Interestingly, the man who had been brazenly threatening the police just hours earlier was seen pleading for forgiveness with folded hands as soon as he was behind bars. Senior Police Inspector Shivaji Budhwant said that the accused has a prior criminal record, with four cases involving assault and attempted murder registered against him at Chikalthana, Cidco, and Jinsi police stations. Police Sub-Inspector Upendra Kutur is leading the ongoing investigation.
