Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:
The city’s main 1,200 mm diameter water pipeline, which supplies drinking water to the city, developed leaks at Jayakwadi and Pharola. Following the incident, the water supply department launched repair work on a war footing from 9 pm onwards.
The repair work continued throughout the night and the following day. After nearly 20 hours of continuous work, repairs were completed by 5 pm, following which pumping from Jayakwadi resumed. Water is expected to reach the city after midnight. The municipal corporation informed on Friday evening that overhead water tanks would be filled overnight and regular water supply would resume on Saturday morning.
The city’s water supply had remained suspended for two days, causing considerable inconvenience to residents. Water is supplied to the city through three pipelines of 1,200 mm, 900 mm and 700 mm diameters. Except for the Cidco-Hudco areas, the entire city depends on the 1,200 mm diameter pipeline.
A major leakage had already developed in this pipeline near Jayakwadi, and the municipal corporation had planned repairs for Saturday. However, before the scheduled work could begin, a large breach occurred in the same pipeline at Pharola at around 9 pm. Pumping was immediately stopped and repair work at both locations commenced on an emergency basis.
Additional city engineer Anil Tanpure, executive engineer Vasant Bhoye, deputy engineer Kiran Dhande, along with Manoj Baviskar and junior engineer Subhash Lahade and other staff members worked through the night to complete the repairs.
Leakages near Jalannagar and in front of the railway station ingate were also repaired simultaneously. The water supply section stated that pumping had resumed in the evening and water would reach the city late at night.
The Cidco-Hudco area continued to receive water through a separate express pipeline, and therefore was unaffected by the shutdown of the main pipeline.
Water scarcity across the city
Water supply across the city stopped from 9 pm on Thursday. As a result, localities scheduled to receive water late on Thursday night did not get supply. By Friday, all overhead tanks had run dry, forcing authorities to postpone all water distribution schedules by one day. Areas that did not receive water on Friday are now expected to receive supply on Saturday.
