In an incident that underscores the continuing obsession with a male heir amid recurring cases of illegal sex determination, an 85-year-old woman’s son allegedly refused to claim her body, compelling her daughter to perform the last rites.
Sindhubai Mahajan, a resident of Cidco N-2, died on Monday after prolonged illness. Around 15 years ago, following a dispute, her son had reportedly driven her out of the house. Since then, her daughter Kantabai Mahajan had been caring for her. Bedridden for the past five years, Sindhubai was occasionally visited by her son, who relatives allege was more focused on getting the house transferred to his name than on her health.

Did not attend the funeral
After Sindhubai’s death on Monday morning, Kantabai informed her brother, hoping he would attend the funeral. He did not respond, and when relatives went to his residence, it was found locked. Eventually, at around 5 pm, Kantabai performed her mother’s last rites at the Mukundwadi crematorium.
