Daren Sammy, the 2012 and 2016 World T20-winning skipper will serve as an independent non-member director in Cricket West Indies for two years after his appointment was confirmed last Thursday. The Board of Directors approved a second term for Trinidadian Attorney Debra Coryat-Patton and Jamaican Surgeon and University Administrator Dr. Akshai Mansingh. Sammy has been roped in keeping in mind two fundamental principles, which have helped in West Indies’ improvement in the last two years- implementation of a Cricket First Policy and increased utilisation of regional technical expertise.

"It is an honour to be appointed as a CWI Director; this is another great opportunity for me to give my best to West Indies cricket in a new way, off the field," Sammy said in a CWI media release on Wednesday (June 23). "All my local, regional and international experiences have prepared me to make a significant ongoing impact in West Indies cricket. I am excited and thankful for the chance to serve and look forward to giving back to the sport and region that I love so much. " CWI President Ricky Skerritt too was pleased with the appointment and stressed Sammy's experience will help the board. "I am delighted to welcome Daren Sammy as an independent, non-member Director whose role will be to ensure that all the right questions are being asked while contributing to the shaping of new ideas and solutions," Skerritt said.

Sammy is currently in Abu Dhabi where he’s with the Peshawar Zalmi, who are set to play the 2021 Pakistan Super League (PSL) final against the Multan Sultans. Sammy hasn’t represented the Caribbean team since guiding them to glory in the T20 WC in India. Sammy is also a Cricket Consultant for the St. Lucia Zouks in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). He is the first cricketer from St Lucia where a stadium has been named after him. Sammy has also captained the Windward Islands cricket team.
