India National Cricket Team vs Afghanistan National Cricket Team: Veteran pacer Mohammed Shami continues to remain out of the Indian team after being overlooked for the upcoming Test and ODI series against the Afghanistan national cricket team. The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Tuesday announced India’s squads for the one-off Test and three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. However, Shami’s name was absent from both squads despite his impressive performances in domestic cricket and the ongoing IPL 2026 season.
Speaking after the squad announcement, chief selector Ajit Agarkar revealed that Shami is currently fit only for T20 cricket and is not yet ready to return to the longer formats. “No (discussions on Shami's Test return). As far as we have been told that at this point ... his body is allowing him to (play), I know he has played a domestic season this year. But from the information that I have got, is that at this point it's T20 cricket that he's sort of ready for. So there was no discussion regarding him," Agarkar said while talking to reporters,” Agarkar said.
Shami enjoyed an impressive domestic season, picking up 47 wickets across 16 matches. The 35-year-old claimed 20 wickets in the Ranji Trophy, 16 wickets in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and 11 wickets in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
The pacer last represented India during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where he finished as the joint-highest wicket-taker for the side alongside Varun Chakravarthy with nine wickets. Shami has also delivered solid performances for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2026, taking 10 wickets so far in the tournament.
India and Afghanistan will play a one-off Test followed by a three-match ODI series in June.
