The 44-year-old has not played a single match in IPL 2026 so far. He was initially expected to miss only a short period after suffering the injury before the start of the campaign, but his recovery has taken longer than anticipated.

Speculation around Dhoni’s future has intensified in recent weeks, especially after he did not travel with the squad for CSK’s clash against Delhi Capitals on May 5. However, fresh reports from inside the CSK camp suggest the franchise remains confident about his return later this season. According to RevSportz, a senior member of the CSK management said Dhoni has resumed intense training sessions and is close to regaining full match fitness. “CSK senior management is very hopeful that MS Dhoni will play this season. He is training hard and is batting for long hours as well. He is very close to full fitness. They are very positive,” the report stated.

Dhoni is understood to be taking a cautious approach with his recovery and does not want to return until he feels fully fit.

Batting coach Michael Hussey had earlier said Dhoni was fit enough to bat and keep wickets, but the franchise wanted him to regain full confidence in his movement before making a comeback.

CSK have not provided a definitive timeline for Dhoni’s return, and uncertainty continues over when the veteran will make his first appearance of IPL 2026.

Meanwhile, the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led team have revived their campaign after a difficult start to the season. CSK defeated Delhi Capitals by eight wickets earlier this week to register their fifth win in 10 matches and stay alive in the playoff race.
