Babar Azam will face a tough to find place in Pakistan's ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 squad after a poor performance, including a disappointing dismissal in the Big Bash League (BBL) qualifier match between Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers on Tuesday, January 20. Chasing a target of 148 at Optus Stadium, Babar was dismissed for a two-ball duck, leaving the Sydney Sixers’ top order in disarray as they slumped to a 48-run defeat against the Perth Scorchers.

The Sydney Sixers had high hopes for the experienced Pakistani international as they attempted to secure a direct route to the BBL final. However, Babar’s innings lasted just two deliveries. Facing the leg-spin of Cooper Connolly in the opening over, Babar attempted an aggressive shot but missed the line entirely.

The Scorchers’ wicket-keeper, Josh Inglis, completed a sharp stumping, and despite a lengthy television review, the third umpire confirmed the dismissal. The Sixers never recovered from the early blow, eventually being bundled out for just 99 runs in 15 overs, sending the Scorchers into their ninth BBL final.

The timing of Babar’s dip in form is particularly concerning for Pakistan’s national selectors. With the 2026 T20 World Cup scheduled to begin in India and Sri Lanka next month, the 31-year-old’s position as a marquee player is being debated.

Although Babar was included in Pakistan’s provisional 20-man squad earlier this month, he has struggled for rhythm throughout the Australian summer. His BBL campaign has yielded just 202 runs across 11 innings, at a modest average of 22.44 and a strike rate of approximately 104—figures well below his usual standards.4

Selection Dilemma for Pakistan

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and head coach Mike Hesson are expected to trim the current provisional squad to a final 15-player roster by the end of January. The exclusion of fellow veteran Mohammad Rizwan from the initial list has already sparked controversy, and many observers suggest that Babar’s lack of acceleration in the powerplay could force the selectors to consider alternative opening partnerships. For now, Babar remains with the Sixers as they prepare for a "must-win" second chance in the Challenger final this Friday.
