Israel's culture minister slammed iconic pop singer Madonna for the subtle political statement made during her shocking Eurovision performance on Monday.

According to Fox News, Israeli Minister Miri Regev dubbed as an "error" the 61-year-old 'Like a Virgin' star's performance in which two of her supporting dancers walked hand in hand with the Israeli and Palestinian flags pinned on their backs.

Regev added, " Politics and a cultural event should not be mixed, with all due respect to Madonna.

The reaction came in the wake of Madonna's message for unity between Israel and Palestine.

When she finished singing her track 'Madame X.' the singer said, "Wake up". The same words were also displayed on the large screen behind her and Quavo.

Because of Israel's decades-long occupation with the West Bank, the depiction of Palestinian flags in Israel is considered highly controversial.

Eurovision's orgzers said: "This element of the performance was not part of the rehearsals and Madonna had been "advised as to the non-political nature of the event."

Madonna took to her Twitter to share the clips from the performance and wrote, "I am grateful for the opportunity to spread the message of peace and unity with the world."

The 61-year-old American singer sang her classic 'Like a Prayer' and her new single 'Future' with rapper-singer Quavo during a live performance at the grand finale of the 2019 Eurovision song contest.
