Life in materiality

(life) Engagement with different materials, mediums and techniques allows artists to infuse these with a new life and character and bring about momentous transformations in their work, says art curator Ashrafi S. Bhagat.

"Moments and Transformations: Finding Life in Materiality", an exhibition curated by her showcases works created by seven artists from Chennai and Puducherry using different materials, mediums and techniques. The exhibition is on the Delhi's Art Alive Gallery till October 5.

Among the participating artists are:

* Kirti Chandak is a multi-faceted artist who works with paper pulp and has used natural elements like seeds, leaves, pods, barks, stems to create assemblages and mixed media paintings.

* Manjula Selvam is a fashion designer, works with remnants of fabrics from her studio, out of which she fashions flowers, cushioned circular forms and plaits.

* Padmanaban T. combines water-colour painting with intricate and detailed paper cuts that he superimposes on the painted background.

* Gubendhiran K. is a painter and a sculptor who combines the two mediums. He works in mixed media creating oils in hyper-realistic language and superimposes on them materials that he salvages from the sea shore.

* Augustin Thilak is a painter, photographer and a performance artist. His mixed media works combine digital photography and water colours of mountainscapes.

* Lakshmi Sreenath works with mixed media and her works have a character of assembling Tantrik symbols, doors, textiles, threads, jasmine flowers and many other elements derived mainly from tradition.

* Potrarasan S. is a ceramic artist, who experiments with materials and firing process. He merges his forms with metal.
