My Job Is Emotional Authenticity’: Anud Singh Dhaka on Preparing for Intense Roles
With every new project, Anud Singh Dhaka continues to show why he is one of the most sincere performers of his generation. His latest web series Psycho Saiyaan sees him stepping into a psychologically intense role that demanded restraint, depth and emotional clarity. Instead of playing it loud, Anud chose to keep it real, and that choice reflects strongly on screen.
Talking about how he prepares for psychologically complex characters, Anud makes it clear that his priority is always the emotional journey. “See, you have to realise it's a visual medium. Films, cinema, web shows, it's a director's medium. So, as an actor, my preparation has to be emotional. There is an entire crew who's there to make sure that technically everything is sound. As an artist, my job is to bring the emotional aspects of it. My job is to bring the emotional authenticity to it.”
For him, acting is not about overthinking technical aspects first. The first thing to do is figure out how the character feels and why they act the way they do. He thinks that a strong emotional base will make the performance seem real.
“Having said that, technical detailing of the role obviously helps. It helps the film, the character, the artist; it makes everybody's life on set easier. But my job is to make sure that I am thorough with my emotional graph.”
Anud also shared that he spends time studying the emotional highs and lows of the character before facing the camera. “Hence, I definitely focus on the emotional graph. I definitely focus on the ups and downs, all the emotional manoeuvres, the needs and decisions that the character makes.”
While emotional authenticity comes first, he does not completely ignore the technical side. He prepares in his own way. “Technical detailing, not so much, but I do get into it. I do like to make my own notes and understand what is being portrayed, how it is being portrayed, and why it is being portrayed. I think that always helps," he added.
In the end, Anud believes balance is key. “So basically, the idea is to strike a good balance between an emotional graph and the technical detailing.”
Through Psycho Saiyaan, Anud Singh Dhaka once again proves that strong emotional preparation is the heart of any powerful performance.
