Veteran actor Shriram Lagoo dies at the age of 92

Veteran actor Shriram Lagoo died of age-related illness at a private hospital in Pune at the age of 92.

Veteran actor Shriram Lagoo died of age-related illness at a private hospital in Pune at the age of 92. Shriram Lagoo was best-known for his performances in Hindi, Marathi and Gujrati films. Shiram Lagoo directed more than 20 Marathi plays. The legendary thespian was also as a trained ENT surgeon and was associated with several social causes. Shriram Lagoo acted in iconic films like Sinhasan, Samna, Pinjra, Zaakol, Khichadi, Mukta and Masala. He was a part of Marathi plays such as Natsamrat and Himalayachi Saoli.He played the iconic role of Ganpatrao aka Appasaheb Belwalkar in the play 'Natasamrat.'  

In Hindi cinema, Shriram Lagoo was best-known for his performances in films like Ek Din Achanak, Gharonda and Lawaris among others. He played the role of Professor Gopal Krishna Gokhale in Sir Richard Attenborough's 'Gandhi'. The actor received the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for the Hindi film 'Gharaonda' in 1978. In 2006, he was awarded with Master Dinanath Mangeshkar Smruti Pratisthan for his contribution to cinema and theatre. Bollywood celebs like Rishi Kapoor, Madhur Bhandarkar took to their social media accounts to mourn the demise of the actor. His last rites will be held on Thursday. Union Minister Prakash Javadekar paid tribute to the legendary actor on Twitter."My tributes to all time great artist Shreeram Lagoo. We have lost a versatile personality. A unique theatre actor dominated silver screen and created impact. He was social activists simultaneously," he tweeted.
