Eight patients succumbed to Covid-19 in Karnataka even as 348 discharges outnumber 204 infections, raising the state's tally to 7,734, said an official on Wednesday.

"New cases reported from Tuesday 5 p.m. to Wednesday 5 p.m., 204," said a health official.

In the past 24 hours, eight people succumbed to the virus, five in Bengaluru Urban and one each in Shivamogga, Bidar and Ballari.

The Covid death count has breached the 100 mark in the southern state to settle at 102.

On a positive note, 348 people were discharged, reducing the number of active cases to 2,824.

Like every day, domestic returnees formed the bulk of cases, accounting for 105 or 51 per cent of the infections.

Within the domestic returnees, 103 or 98 per cent of the cases had travel history to Maharashtra, a Covid hotspot.

However, the number of cases with international travel history to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has plummeted to just two.

Similarly, the number of contacts of earlier cases contracting the virus fell to 57.

On Wednesday, Covid cases spiked in Bengaluru Urban, Yadgir, Ballari, Kalaburagi, Bidar, Dakshina Kannada, Dharwad, Mandya, and Hassan.

Among the new cases, Bengaluru Urban contributed 55, followed by Yadgir (37), Ballari (29), Kalaburagi (19), Bidar (12), Dakshina Kannada and Dharwad (8 each), Mandya (7), Hassan (5), Udupi, Bagalkote and Shivamogga (4 each), Davangere, Uttara Kannda and Chikkaballapura (3 each) and Raichur, Mysuru and Bengaluru Rural (1 each).

As many as 22 patients are suffering from influenza like illness (ILI) and 19 from severe acute respiratory infection (SARI).

Currently, Kalaburagi is leading the state's Covid-19 burden with 442 active cases, followed by Bengaluru Urban (413), Yadgir (397) Raichur (271), Dakshina Kannada (225) and Ballari (222) among others.

In all, 4.64 lakh samples have been tested so far, of which 4.46 lakh have tested negative.

Bengaluru Urban has accounted for 43 deaths, followed by Kalaburagi (10), Bidar (8) and Dakshina Kannada, Vijayapura, and Davangere (6 each), among others.
