Bondi Beach Shooting: Gunmen Identified as Father-Son; 16 Killed at Jewish Celebration in Sydney

At least 16 people were killed and over 35 were injured, with some in critical condition, after gunmen opened fire in Australia's Sydney on Saturday, December 13. The incident occurred during the Jewish festival Hanukkah celebration.

Victims involved in the incident are aged between 10 to 87 years old. The police confirmed that the shooters were the father and his son. Authorities said that there was no third shooter in the incident. Suspect shooters did not have any criminal history in the past.

Who Are Naveed Akram and Sajid Akram?

24-year-old Naveed Akram was the son of another shooter, Javed Akram, accused of attacking along with his father was shot and injured by the police during an exchange of fire. Authorities said he is in critical condition.

His father, Sajid Akram,  was killed during the shooting. Reports say Sajid owned a fruit shop and lived with his family in Sydney. Akram and his father had been staying in Campsie and their home in Bonnyrigg. Police are investigating the shooting that led him to take part in the attack.

The second shooter has been identified as the 50-year-old father of Naveed Akram (the shooter who was identified earlier today). Police revealed that before the attack, the father and son had told relatives they were going on a weekend fishing trip to Jervis Bay. The father was a licensed firearms owner. According to the NY Post, citing a police report, Sajid Akram had held a gun licence for around 10 years and had six firearms registered in his name.

Six guns were seized from the crime scene and related searches. Forensic teams are now carrying out ballistic tests to confirm whether these weapons were used in the shooting. Despite declaring the incident a terrorist attack, police have not yet confirmed what motivated the shooters. Commissioner Lanyon said investigators need more time before commenting on belief, intent or possible links to extremist groups.
