The Iranian Embassy in Delhi lowered its flag to half-mast on Sunday following the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in coordinated strikes reportedly carried out by the United States and Israel on Saturday. Iranian state media reported that along with Khamenei, his daughter, grandchild, daughter-in-law and son-in-law were also killed in the attack, marking one of the most dramatic escalations in the region in recent years.

The strikes, reportedly conducted under operations titled Operation Epic Fury and Lion’s Roar, targeted key leadership-linked sites. In retaliation, Iran launched missiles and drones toward Israel and U.S. military bases in the region, sharply intensifying tensions across West Asia and raising fears of a broader conflict.

Following his death, Iran has declared 40 days of national mourning, according to Reuters citing state media. In Shia Islam, the 40th day after death, known as Arba'een, carries immense spiritual and cultural significance. Flags across the country are flying at half-mast, and public gatherings and memorial ceremonies are being organized to pay respects to the late leader. The announcement of a full 40-day mourning period also provides the clerical establishment time to manage the sensitive leadership transition behind closed doors amid mounting geopolitical uncertainty.

Khamenei, who succeeded the Islamic Republic’s founder Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989, led Iran for 37 years. His tenure was defined by unwavering resistance to Western influence, consolidation of clerical authority, and an assertive regional posture. His death marks the end of a pivotal chapter in Iran’s modern history, with the nation now entering a period of mourning, transition, and heightened regional tension.
