Acidity After Tea? Try These Easy Remedies for Instant Relief

For many, tea is an essential part of daily life, consumed multiple times a day. However, this can lead to acidity and heartburn, causing discomfort such as chest burning, sour regurgitation, or stomach upset, especially when drinking tea on an empty stomach. While some may consider giving up tea, simple adjustments to tea-drinking habits can prevent these issues.

Caffeine and tannins in tea increase body acidity, triggering these sensations. Therefore, taking precautions before drinking tea can help avoid acidity. Let's explore a remedy to prevent post-tea acidity.

1. Drink a glass of warm or plain water before having your tea. This is a simple yet effective remedy for combating acidity. When we drink water, it dilutes the acid present in our stomach. As a result, the stomach's pH level remains balanced after consuming tea, thereby preventing acidity.

2. The habit of having "bed tea"—drinking tea immediately upon waking up in the morning—is extremely detrimental to stomach health. Consuming tea on an empty stomach increases the production of gastric juices (stomach acid). Therefore, ensure you have a light snack or breakfast before drinking your tea. Eating a biscuit, a piece of toast, or two almonds beforehand ensures that the tea does not have an adverse effect on your stomach.

3. Many people have a habit of drinking "strong" tea—tea that has been boiled for an extended period. The longer tea is boiled, the higher its tannin content becomes; this elevated tannin level is what ultimately leads to acidity. Additionally, adding ginger, lemongrass, or cardamom to your tea improves digestion and helps alleviate issues related to gas.

4. Excessive sugar in tea also contributes to increased acidity. If possible, you should opt for tea made with jaggery instead of sugar, or simply reduce the amount of sugar you use. Jaggery helps improve digestive strength.

5. Many people have a habit of drinking tea immediately after a meal. This hinders the absorption of nutrients from the food, leads to indigestion, and aggravates acidity. One should maintain a gap of at least one hour between a meal and drinking tea.

6. Avoid drinking tea more than twice a day. Consuming excessive amounts of tea can negatively impact your sleep. To find relief from acidity, try eating fennel seeds (saunf); this improves digestion and reduces the burning sensation in the stomach. Drinking cold milk provides a soothing effect to the stomach and helps neutralize the acidic effects within the body. Furthermore, eating a small piece of jaggery can enhance digestion and prevent acidity.
