Maharashtra: Who Is Jishnu Dev Varma, The Newly Appointed Governor of the State?

Jishnu Dev Varma has been appointed as the new Governor of Maharashtra after a fresh round of gubernatorial appointments announced by President Droupadi Murmu. In the same reshuffle, Shiv Pratap Shukla, who was serving as Governor of Himachal Pradesh, has been assigned the role of Governor of Telangana. Dev Varma is regarded as an experienced political leader from Northeast India with a long career in public life. Over the years, he has played an influential role in the political developments of Tripura and is widely recognised for his administrative experience and leadership within the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Born on August 15, 1957, in Agartala, the capital city of Tripura, Dev Varma entered public life after completing his education and gradually became active in politics. He formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party during the 1990s and began working to expand the party’s presence in Tripura at a time when Left parties held strong political dominance in the state. Through organisational work and political outreach, he contributed to strengthening the BJP’s base in the region. His involvement during those early years helped the party establish a stronger political footing, eventually paving the way for its growth and increased electoral influence in the state’s evolving political landscape.

Dev Varma also entered national politics by contesting parliamentary elections from the Tripura East Lok Sabha constituency in 1996, 1998 and 1999, demonstrating his early engagement with national-level electoral politics. His most significant political role came in 2018 when the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a historic victory in Tripura and formed the government. Following the win, he was appointed Deputy Chief Minister of the state. Between 2018 and 2023, he held several key departments, including finance, power, planning, panchayat raj and rural development. During this period, he was involved in major policy decisions and administrative initiatives aimed at strengthening governance and development across different sectors.

During his tenure as Deputy Chief Minister, Dev Varma concentrated on economic planning, improving rural infrastructure and enhancing the power sector in Tripura. His administration also focused on implementing several central government welfare and development schemes to accelerate growth in the state. With decades of political and administrative experience behind him, he was later appointed Governor of Telangana. His latest appointment as Governor of Maharashtra is viewed as politically significant, considering the state’s major role in India’s economy and governance. Apart from politics, Dev Varma is also known for his interests in literature, arts and sports, and is recognised as a poet and writer associated with cultural and sporting activities.
