A 20 year old man jumped to death from his sixth floor apartment in Mulund after allegedly stabbing his father and grandfather to death on Saturday. The incident took place in Vasant Oscar housing society. The police said that Shardul Mangle murdered his 55-year-old father Milind, a motivational speaker, and bed-ridden 85-year-old grandfather Suresh with a knife.A neighbour, who witnessed a part of the double murder, but did not wish to be named, said: “Around 8.45 am, I was sleeping when I suddenly heard someone banging my door. When I opened the door, I saw Milind with his throat slit and blood all over his body. As I was about to open the safety door, Shardul came running from his house with a knife in his hand.”

The police said the neighbour witnessed Shardul stabbing Milind multiple times on his back. He shut the door to ensure the safety of his family, including an infant, wife and parents. The police said that after attacking Milind, Shardul returned to their apartment and slit his grandfather’s throat. Following this, he jumped to his death. By then, the neighbour had informed other residents of the building of the incident. “By the time we reached, Shardul had jumped from his sixth floor house and was lying on the ground near the parking lot. He seemed to be still alive. We informed the Police Control Room and called an ambulance,” said another resident. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone VII) Prashant Kadam said, “We came to know about the incident around 9.30 am. Our team went to the spot and rushed Shardul and Suresh to the hospital. The grandfather was barely alive. Both were declared dead during treatment.”

A caretaker, Anand Kamble, was present in the house at the time of the incident. Fearing for his life, he had locked himself in the bathroom, said police. In his statement to the police, he said: “I had just handed over coffee to Milind and was working in the kitchen, when I heard Milind scream. I saw that Shardul had attacked him with a knife. I ran to the bathroom and locked myself in. I had asked the grandfather to come with me but he refused.”Milind had separated from his wife Priya eight years ago. She stays with their daughter Riya in Ghatkopar.“Shardul used to stay with his mother’s parents but as he was troubling them, Milind had got him to stay in his house,” said a resident. The neighbour who witnessed the murder said that Milind had once told him that Shardul had been affected by his parents’ separation.“We have learnt that Shardul was suffering from schizophrenia. He would get aggressive over small things. Differences had cropped up between Milind and Shardul since the last one-and-a-half months and they would argue often,” said Kadam. The police said that they have seized two knives from the spot. “The first knife with which Shardul attacked Milind broke. He then got another knife from the kitchen and stabbed his father and grandfather,” said Kadam. The police said that Shardul had even washed the second knife.
