The Congress on Monday accused the BJP of playing politics on the Palghar incident in which three persons were lynched by a violent mob on the suspicion that they were thieves.

Senior Congress leader Sachin Sawant said that the BJP should be ashamed that it is trying to communalise the incident and play politics over the issue. "Those who could not stop such incidents while being in the power for five years - whether it was in Dhule or the incident that had taken place Palghar over a year ago, are playing politics over the incident and it is a serious issue," said Sawant in a tweet.

The Congress leader said that where the incident took place is a bastion of the BJP. "For the last 10 years, BJP is in power in the gram panchayat. BJP's Chitra Choudhary is the Sarpanch. And most of the arrested people belong to BJP." "Inquiry must be conducted into who is behind these rumours," said Sawant.

On the night of April 16, three Mumbai residents who were on their way to Surat in Gujarat were lynched by local residents in Gadakchinchale village in Maharashtra''s Palghar district on the suspicion that they were thieves.
