Mumbai Customs officials at the city airport have seized foreign currency worth over Rs 93 lakh and recovered suspected hydroponic weed valued at nearly Rs 20 crore in three separate cases during operations carried out between May 7 and May 8.
According to Mumbai Customs Zone-III Airport Commissionerate, the first case involved the seizure of 1,00,000 US dollars, equivalent to approximately Rs 93.45 lakh, from a passenger travelling from Jamnagar to Dubai via Mumbai. The passenger was scheduled to depart on an Indigo Airlines flight numbered 6E-1453 when Customs officials intercepted and recovered the undeclared foreign currency.
In another major operation based on APIS profiling, Customs officials recovered 17.915 kilograms of suspected hydroponic weed from a passenger who had arrived in Mumbai from Bangkok on a Thai Airways flight TG317. The seized contraband is estimated to be worth around Rs 17.91 crore in the illicit market.
In a separate case based on specific intelligence inputs, Customs officials seized 1.900 kilograms of suspected hydroponic weed valued at approximately Rs 1.90 crore from two passengers who arrived from Bangkok on an Air India flight AI2353.
Further investigation is underway in all the cases, officials said.
