Holi 2026 in Mumbai: BMC Releases Guidelines for Safe Holika Dahan and Dhulivandan

The Mumbai civic administration has urged residents to celebrate Holi responsibly this year by embracing eco-friendly practices that safeguard the environment. Ahead of Holika Dahan, scheduled for Monday evening, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) advised people against cutting trees or branches, recommending the use of dry wood to uphold tradition. The civic body cautioned against burning treated wood, plastics, rubber, tyres, or any hazardous materials, as the resulting fumes can be toxic to both health and the environment. Housing societies and local communities were encouraged to organise environmentally conscious Holika Dahan events to minimise ecological harm.

For the Dhulivandan festivities, observed the day after Holika Dahan, the BMC emphasised water conservation and the use of safe, natural, and organic colours suitable for children and skin health. Synthetic colours containing chemicals or heavy metals were strongly discouraged, while dry colours were recommended to reduce water usage. Citizens were reminded to be mindful of their celebrations, choosing eco-conscious alternatives wherever possible. The civic body highlighted that responsible practices during Holi can ensure both joyful festivities and protection of the local environment for future generations.

In addition to eco-friendly measures, the BMC called on residents to limit noise pollution during the festival, especially in the vicinity of hospitals, residential areas, and other sensitive locations. Sound levels should be maintained within permissible limits to prevent disturbance to patients, elderly citizens, and children. The civic body’s appeal focused on combining traditional celebration with social responsibility, encouraging communities to prioritise safety, environmental sustainability, and public well-being. By following these guidelines, Mumbaikars can enjoy Holi festivities while minimising negative impacts on health, the environment, and local communities.
