'Mumbai At No. 2 In Crime, Thank You Mahayuti': Priyanka Chaturvedi Slams Govt Over NCRB Data

Shiv Sena UBT leader Priyanka Chaturvedi on Friday criticised the Mahayuti government after the latest NCRB report showed a notable increase in crime cases in Mumbai during 2024. She shared the data on social media, claiming the city had slipped to the second position among metro cities in several crime categories, including offences against women, senior citizens and cybercrime. Citing the figures, she remarked that Mumbai’s law and order situation had worsened under the current government. The NCRB data also indicated an overall rise in total registered offences compared to the previous year across the metropolis, as per the report data.

Mumbai’s crime data revealed a rise in offences against women as well as senior citizens, according to the NCRB report. Cases related to crimes against women increased from 6,025 in 2023 to 6,358 in 2024, marking a 5.5 per cent growth, with the city ranking second after Delhi. At the same time, crimes targeting senior citizens saw a steep surge, climbing from 518 cases to 791 cases, a jump of 52.7 per cent. Officials believe many of these incidents are linked to cyber fraud and financial scams affecting elderly residents in urban areas across Mumbai during the year 2024.

Cybercrime incidents in Mumbai also witnessed a significant rise in 2024, with the city recording 5,087 cases compared to 4,169 in 2023, reflecting a 22 per cent increase, as per NCRB data. Mumbai stood second after Bengaluru in cybercrime-related cases among major metropolitan cities. Although several traditional crimes such as murder, robbery, extortion, chain snatching and house break-ins showed a decline, the report highlighted an upward trend in serious offences like molestation, rape, sexual harassment and cases under the POCSO Act.
