Mumbai Car Loan Scam: Fake Recovery Agents Chase Man for Alleged EMI Dues of Vehicle on Eastern Express Highway

Scams are becoming very common in Mumbai. Recently, a disturbing attempted fraud has come to light from the Chunabhatti. A motorist claimed he was chased by a group posing as loan recovery agents on the Eastern Express Highway. The agents told him that he was supposed to clear the loan, but the man had never taken out any mortgage on his car. This incident, which happened in broad daylight, has raised concerns about public safety.  The victim, Sarabjit Chadha, shared his ordeal through a series of posts on the social media platform X. Chadha in his posts, stated that no case was initially registered due to the accused having some political connections, but later the victim posted on X that he was called to file an official complaint.

He described in his posts how he was pursued by five unidentified men riding two motorcycles around 4:45 pm. Chadha stated that the men attempted to force him to stop his car by alleging that he had unpaid loan dues and pending EMIs linked to the vehicle he was driving. Chadha maintained that all the claims made by the loan recovery agents were entirely false, and his car carried no outstanding loan.

When Chadha refused to stop, the men began chasing his vehicle, engaging in dangerous driving and intimidation tactics. They tried to coerce him into pulling over. Chadha felt unsafe, and for his safety, he directly drove to Chunabhatti police chowki. When the accused noticed the presence of police officials, two of the alleged pursuers reportedly fled the scene, and three stayed back. The three men then tried to justify their actions by presenting details on a mobile application, claiming it showed a loan linked to Chadha’s vehicle.

Chadha pointed out a disparity on the app. He stated that the vehicle registration number matched, the app identified the car as a Honda City, whereas his vehicle was of a completely different make. This made the whole incident more suspicious, and the authenticity of the loan agents’ claim came under scrutiny.

Police initially called for backup. One of the accused fled while the other apologised. The third accused man reportedly made a few phone calls as the situation escalated. Chadha was taken to the police station. At the police station, one accused was detained while the other two were asked to produce their identification and vehicle documents.

The situation saw a major twist when the men who fled the scene returned with a group of more than six individuals. One of the individuals from the group was allegedly linked to a political party. Chadha said that after their arrival, the approach at the police station shifted. Instead of filing an official complaint or filing a non-cognisable (NC) offence, he was asked to settle the matter. Chadha said that as he spent nearly four hours at the police station, he was mentally exhausted. He then agreed to accept a written apology from the accused. Later, he posted that he got a call from the police and they had asked him to file a complaint.

Chadha did express gratitude towards the police for helping him in the initial phase of the incident. But the incident has sparked serious concerns about organised road scams and the influence of external pressures on due process. Mumbai Police has not yet issued an official statement on the matter.
