Mumbai: Family of Four Dies After Consuming Watermelon Pydhonie, Probe Underway

A shocking incident in South Mumbai’s Pydhonie area has resulted in the death of four members of a family, with early reports indicating that they fell seriously ill after consuming watermelon, reported the Free Press Journal. The tragedy unfolded in the early hours of Monday, creating panic among local residents. According to initial information, the family experienced symptoms such as vomiting, dizziness, and severe abdominal pain after eating the fruit at their residence in Ghati Galli. Their health reportedly worsened rapidly within a few hours on Sunday following consumption, ultimately leading to the fatal outcome, as investigations began into possible causes by authorities and police.

The victims have been identified as Abdullah Dokadia (40), Nasreen Dokadia (35), and their two daughters, Ayesha (16) and Zainab (13), who lived in the Mughal Building in the densely populated locality. Reports suggest that the family had gathered at home on April 25, Saturday night, during which the watermelon was consumed. On April 26, Sunday morning, the two daughters were found unconscious, prompting immediate medical assistance, the report added. They were rushed to JJ Hospital, where one was declared dead on arrival while the other died a few hours later. Soon after, both parents also passed away, deepening the mystery surrounding the case further under investigation.

A postmortem examination has been conducted on all four bodies, and forensic reports are awaited to determine the exact cause of death. Neighbours alerted authorities after the situation deteriorated, prompting a swift response from emergency services. Despite efforts by doctors, all four victims could not be saved. The Mumbai Police has reportedly launched an investigation into the matter to ascertain whether food poisoning, contamination, or any other factor led to the deaths. Officials are also examining the circumstances surrounding the consumption of the fruit and the sudden collapse of the family within hours of showing symptoms. Currently, the probe is ongoing.
