In a shocking hit-and-run incident, a speeding car knocked down four people, including a woman, in Mumbai’s Powai area on Sunday evening, triggering panic in the locality. The accused driver fled the scene without offering assistance but was later detained by Powai Police for questioning within a few hours.
The accident occurred near Mahatma Phule Nagar on the Western Eastern Express Highway–JVLR stretch in Powai. According to police, the Accused, a youth from Kharghar in Navi Mumbai, was driving his Creta car towards Powai when he lost control of the vehicle and rammed into three pedestrians and a biker.
The injured have been identified as Manisha Sawant, Natha Sopan Pargaonkar, Ammachar Pandey, and Dhanush Pandey. All four sustained injuries in the accident. While three victims were discharged after primary treatment, Manisha Sawant was admitted to Sion Hospital for further medical care.
After the accident, the driver fled the spot without informing the police or providing medical help to the victims. Upon receiving information, Powai Police rushed to the scene and, with the help of locals, shifted the injured to nearby hospitals.
The accused was intercepted by traffic police in the Vikhroli Parksite area while attempting to escape. During questioning, it was confirmed that his vehicle was involved in the accident, following which he was handed over to Powai Police.
A case has been registered against him for rash and negligent driving causing grievous injuries. He was later sent for a medical examination, and police are awaiting the report to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
The incident created a major stir in the Powai area on Sunday evening.
