A Mumbai police constable was killed on Wednesday afternoon, April 29, after a drilling machine fell on him at the MMRDA flyover construction site in the Mankhurd area. The deceased has been identified as Santosh Chavan, who was attached to the Nehru Nagar Police Station.

The incident occurred when Chavan was on his way home from duty, according to a Mumbai Police official, who told the news agency IANS. It is suspected that the crane toppled due to a landslide as the drilling machine was on uneven ground.

A case is being registered against the contractor at the Mankhurd police station and further investigation is underway. According to police, road work for the Municipal Corporation was being carried out on the northbound stretch of the Sion-Panvel Road within the jurisdiction of Mankhurd Police Station. An excavator drilling crane was being used for the work. The contractor had reportedly installed the crane on uneven ground.

During the operation, the heavy crane lost balance and suddenly collapsed onto the motorcycle (MH 43 W 3238) of Santosh Chavan, who was passing through the area at the time. Chavan died on the spot in the horrific accident. He had served in the police force for 23 years.
