A tragic accident took place on May 4 at Platform No. 1 of Bakhtiyarpur railway station in Bihar’s Saharsa district, where a woman and her niece lost their lives after being hit by the New Delhi–Malda Express (Train No. 14004) while attempting to cross the railway tracks on foot. The train was passing through the station on a signal clearance when both women became trapped between the moving train and the platform. Panic spread across the station as passengers and bystanders desperately tried to rescue them, but their efforts failed. The horrifying incident created chaos at the crowded railway station within moments.

The entire incident was captured on the station’s CCTV cameras, showing the sequence of events that led to the fatal accident. Following the tragedy, Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel rushed to the spot and collected the remains before sending them for post-mortem examination. Family members later revealed over the phone that 62-year-old Intar Devi, wife of Nandlal Singh from Manpur in Gaya, had come to the station to drop her niece, 45-year-old Sangeeta Devi, a resident of Ramnagar Diyara Athmalgola. While trying to cross the tracks and climb onto the platform, they were suddenly struck by the speeding train and died on the spot.

RPF Inspector in-charge Jawahar Lal confirmed that the victims’ relatives had been informed and further legal procedures were being carried out by railway police authorities. Eyewitnesses stated that several passengers shouted warnings and attempted to save the women after noticing the approaching train, but there was not enough time to prevent the accident. The tragedy has once again highlighted the safety concerns at the station’s eastern side, where the main entrance, exit gate, and booking counter witness heavy crowd movement every day. Since there is no nearby foot overbridge for passengers heading toward Platforms 2 and 3, many commuters risk crossing the tracks to save time. Local residents have now renewed demands for the railway administration to construct an overbridge near the eastern entry and exit point to prevent such fatal incidents in the future.
