Chhattisgarh Petrol Pump Fire Viral Video: Youth Allegedly Sets Fuel Nozzle Ablaze After Being Asked Not to Smoke

A minor act of negligence nearly escalated into a serious fire accident at a petrol pump in the Urla locality of Raipur, Chhattisgarh, on Thursday evening. What began as an attempt to smoke during refuelling quickly turned dangerous when a young man allegedly set the fuel nozzle on fire after being warned against lighting a cigarette. The sudden blaze engulfed parts of a motorcycle and the dispensing unit, sparking chaos at the busy station. Alert pump employees reacted without delay, using a fire extinguisher to control the flames and successfully preventing the situation from spiralling into a large-scale disaster or explosion.

According to police officials, two individuals identified as Dharmendra Kshatri and Imran had arrived at the petrol pump on a motorcycle to fill fuel. Imran reportedly stayed seated on the vehicle while Dharmendra stood beside it as the tank cap was opened. During the refuelling process, Dharmendra allegedly pulled out a cigarette and attempted to light it. When staff members objected and reminded him that smoking is strictly prohibited at fuel stations, he reportedly lost his temper. In a fit of anger, he is said to have used a lighter to ignite the fuel nozzle pipe, instantly triggering flames.

The fire spread rapidly from the nozzle to the motorcycle’s fuel tank and parts of the pump machine, creating panic among those present. Both accused, along with the petrol pump workers, rushed away from the immediate vicinity as the flames intensified. Officials stated that one of the attendants displayed remarkable presence of mind by swiftly detaching the fuel pipe and immediately shutting off the main fuel supply. Using the fire safety equipment available on the premises, staff members managed to extinguish the blaze before it could reach nearby vehicles or underground storage tanks, thereby averting a potentially catastrophic explosion.

Amid the commotion, some burning fuel reportedly splashed onto the accused as well. After the fire was brought under control, the two men allegedly tried to escape from the scene. However, alert pump employees detained them and promptly informed the police, filing a formal complaint. Acting on the manager’s report and reviewing CCTV footage from the location, the Urla police arrested both individuals. Inspector Rohit Mahelkar confirmed that a case has been registered under sections related to arson and endangering public safety. Authorities credited the swift action of the pump staff for preventing a major tragedy.
