Burman, whogrew up in Bangladesh and has been living in France for the last five decades, has maintained a strong connection with his two countries. The fusion of Europe and India in his works create a hybrid aesthetic that speaks at several cultural and emotional levels. His artworks revolve around mythology and history, and his works are populated by humans, animals, cityscapes that are dreamlike in appearance.

Barman's mythical figures evoke ancient tales depicting sensuous maidens, children playing, and exotic birds and beasts. There is an amalgamation of mythical and real in his artworks.

His cultural bonding with Bengal and with its people orchestrates a fine link between imagination and experience. Even his casual way of sketching or drawings, art jottings or doodling has a creative zest and an orderly execution.

Burman has been honoured with many awards including the Medailled'argent au Salon de Montmorency – 1956, Prix des Etrangers, Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, Prix de la ville de l'Isle-Adam Medailled'or, Salon des Artistes Francais, Grand Palais, Paris - Medaille arts, Science et Letters - Medaille au Salon de Juvisy - Invite d 'honneur, Colombes - Invite d'honneur, Douai Invite d'honneur, sainte-Maxime - Invite d'honneur, English Les Bains - Invite d 'honneur, Delle.
