New Delhi, March 4 The Delhi High Court on Wednesday disposed of a plea seeking direction to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to ascertain the physical and mental health of the four Nirbhaya case death-row convicts.

A Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice D.N. Patel and Justice C. Harishankar, asked the petitioner to approach the NHRC, a high constitutional authority in itself.

The petition, filed by advocate A. Rajarajan, also sought direction to the NHRC to enquire the rights violations by the authorities entrusted with executing the death sentence and submit a report.

During the day, a Delhi court issued notice to the four convicts on the Delhi government's plea, seeking issuance of fresh date for execution. The government moved the court a few hours after President Ram Nath Kovind rejected Pawan Gupta's mercy plea.

The four convicts Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Kumar Sharma and Akshay Kumar were to be executed on March 3, but the court had deferred it on the grounds that Pawan's mercy petition was pending.

The case pertains to gang-rape and murder of a 23-year-old girl in the national capital in December 2012. Six people, including the four convicts and a juvenile, were named as accused.

Ram Singh, the sixth accused, allegedly committed suicide in Tihar jail days after the trial began. The juvenile was released in 2015 after three years in a correctional home.
