The Centre on Wednesday introduced the new National Education Policy, to bring a complete and overhaul change in the Indian education system.
According to the NEP 2020, “Select universities (e.g., those from among the top 100 universities in the world) will be permitted to operate in India.”
“A legislative framework facilitating such entry will be put in place, and such universities will be given special dispensation regarding regulatory, governance, and content norms on par with other autonomous institutions of India,” it added.
Similarly, “High performing Indian universities will be encouraged to set up campuses in other countries, and similarly.”
Foreign universities have lauded the National Education Policy (NEP) approved by the Union Cabinet for introducing many reformations in the Indian education system after 34 years.
In an interview with India Today Nilesh Gaikwad ,Country Manager - EDHEC Business School - France, said, "The decision allowing foreign universities to set up operations in the country is a boost for education reforms and will go a long way in not only improving the quality of education but also the application of the curriculum in India."
"This will provide much-awaited independence to institutions realising their visions. Setting up a national testing agency that directs common entrance exams is another welcome step as it will unclutter and provide homogeneity to testing and ranking processes," he said.
Aditya Malkani -South & East Asia Representative at The Association of Commonwealth Universities said, "The National Education Policy 2020 has introduced a range of exciting new measures, and its strong focus on multidisciplinary education, and flexible learning trajectories is welcome, as is its focus on technology oriented learning, multilingualism and the power of language in teaching and learning."
