CPI-M leader Maruti Mandap, along with leaders of several Muslim orgsations, staged a protest outside the office of the Commissioner of Police, Kalaburagi against the imposition of Section 144 in the area.

The protestors were later detained by the police.

Under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), the assembly of four or more people in an area is prohibited.

Section 144 was imposed in the city, excluding places of worship and premises of Deputy Commissioner's (DC) office, till 6 pm on Friday.

This prohibition was imposed in order to ensure the maintenance of law and order in the city a day after the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019, became an Act after Presidential assent on Thursday.

Meanwhile, CPM leaders in Kerala staged a protest in front of a post office in Kottayam against the controversial Act on Friday.

The CAB has now become the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, following assent from President Ram Nath Kovind.

According to the Act, members of the Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Zoroastrian communities who have come from Pakistan, Afghstan and Bangladesh till December 31, 2014, and facing religious persecution there will not be treated as illegal immigrants but will be given Indian citizenship.

Rajya Sabha cleared the legislation on Wednesday after the Lok Sabha had passed the Bill on Monday.

The passage of the Act has trigged intense protests in the Northeastern states. Curfew was imposed in some areas.
