The Purvanchal Sena is a lesser-known Dalit outfit in eastern Uttar Pradesh that had extended support to the January 29 Bharat Bandh called by the Bahujan Mukti Morcha against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Since the campaign was launched earlier this week from here, the Sena has already enlisted the support of over 3,000 people in wiring postcards to the Prime Minister.

The campaign, which is also being run on the social media, calls for a DNA-based NRC instead of one that asks people to show documents to establish citizenship.

Dhirendra Pratap, national president of Purvanchal Sena, said: "At a time the economy is going down following back-to-back demonetisation and the GST blows, the Centre is pushing the country towards another financial turmoil by spending crores of rupees on the NRC and NPR (National Population Register) exercises? The government should focus on providing employment to the youth instead of this".

He said that the CAA was against the Constitution, as it violated the clause of equality in Article 14, besides being discriminatory in nature.

"Our mothers and sisters are already fighting bravely against this black and dangerous law at Shaheen Bagh and other places. We are asking men to send postcards to the Prime Minister on this issue," he added.

The outfit has also demanded a ban on the EVMs and said that elections should be held through the ballot paper.
