Chandigarh: In an unexpected turn of events, a man allegedly threw acid on his maternal aunt, a primary school teacher, while she was teaching a class in Punjab's Batala district. This incident occurred on Friday April 17, 2026, inflicting severe burns and also injuring two children present in the classroom, police said.
According to PTI, accused identified as Tejbir Singh has been arrested, they said, adding that the victim is undergoing treatment at the civil hospital in Batala. Deputy Superintendent of Police (Hargobindpur Sahib) Harish Behal said the incident took place under Ghuman police station limits, asserting that police took immediate action after the incident was reported.
Meanwhile, Punjab Police arrested two suspects on Thursday evening for Wednesday's grenade blast outside the BJP office in Chandigarh, Punjab. The arrested suspect from Morinda, identified as Aman Singh alias Bholu and Gurtej Singh of Rattangarh village in Rupnagar district.
Some material found in a yellow envelope was recovered from one suspect. However, the police have not yet confirmed it, reported the news agency IANS. Meanwhile, a separatist group, Babbar Khalsa, had claimed responsibility for the attack, but police have yet to confirm it. A Chinese-made P-86 hand grenade, smuggled from Pakistan via drone, was used in the blast, according to the initial police investigation.
Punjab Police formed multiple teams, including the crime branch, Operation Cell, and District Crime Cell, and conducted raids in Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal. The grenade was thrown from 25-30 feet away, landing near the BJP Headquarters' main gate in Chandigarh. Police personnel were on duty nearby, and no injuries were reported.
