Taking a serious view of the "unlawful detention" of Union minister Babul Supriyo by a section of Jadavpur University (JU) students in the campus, West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday said it was a "serious reflection" on the state's law and order.

"The Governor takes the incident very seriously as it involves unlawful detention of a Union minister and this is a very serious reflection on the law and order of the state and on the conduct of the law enforcing agencies," Raj Bhavan said in a statement.

Dhankhar spoke to state chie secretary Malay Kumar De, "who has indicated that a prompt direction is being issued to the Commissioner of Police".

Earlier, Dhankhar spoke to Vice Chancellor Suranjan Das and indicated to him that it was "improper" on his party not to have taken "prompt steps" in the matter, that can lead to "unwholesome results".

Supriyo was slapped, heckled, kicked and shown black flags by a section of JU students when he went to the campus to attend a programme organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.

A large number of slogan-shouting pro-left students surrounded Supriyo for over an hour after he entered the campus on way to the K.P. Basu Memorial Hall where a freshers' welcome programme was scheduled.

Supriyo, however, managed to get in. Later, the students blocked his way again when he tried to leave the campus. Supriyo was again attacked, his spectacles fell off, and his shirt was torn.

Supriyo was still detained on the campus alongside another BJPA leader Agnimitra Paul.
